Another Summer Behind Us

Summer has come and gone, unfortunately with far too few nights spent under the stars. The dwarf and I had a great week in June on Vancouver Island at Scout Canada’s Pacific Jamboree with over 2000 youth. The kids had a fantastic time climbing, trading badges, and meeting fellow Scouts from across the country.  Yet between work and some unexpected renovations on my house, we haven’t had much in the way of outdoor adventures.

I did get a chance to check off two more back country campgrounds in Kananaskis with quick overnights at Big Elbow Campground in the Don Getty Wildland Provincial Park,  and Ribbon Lake in Spray Valley Provincial Park. This leaves just two more before I can say I’ve slept in every Kananaskis back country campground.

That said, we’ve been busy this summer and there have been some interesting developments. We’re in the process of creating a series of courses on camping, hiking and backpacking that we’re looking to launch next spring.  I’m also planning to hike the Great Divide Trail next July and August, 1300km from Waterton Lakes National Park to Kakwa Provincial Park north of Jasper. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for the past few years, and it will be the most epic adventure I’ve attempted. In support of this effort I’ll be blogging my experience on The Trek, be sure to check them out.

Expect to see more activity from us over the coming months

Meet Kelly & Heiko

A selfie to start the trip
As Tolkien aficionados, we’ve always joked that one of us is called to by the mountains (hence the dwarf) and one of us the sea (hence the elf).

Now that we have hobbits of our own, it’s a chance to share what we’ve learned (from the mistakes we’ve made). Read more ...

Beautiful morning in Kananaskis @Albertaparks

Cavell meadows are not open yet.
Deep snow remains in the Cavell Meadows.

Highwood pass (highway 40, Kananaskis trail) is now open following avalanche control work. Pretty rare we do that in June !!!
